Morita equivalent monoids have been studied by the first author [ibid. 3, 359-370 (1972; Zbl 0231.18013)]. There exist many results on Morita dual rins. In this paper Morita duality for monoids is introduced. Let S and T be monoids. Then S-Act and Act-T denote the categories of all left S-acts and right T-acts, respectively. By \({}_ S{\mathcal C}\) we denote the minimal full subcategory of S-Act which is closed under subsets, factor acts, and contains S. Analogously, \({\mathcal C}_ T\) is defined. The monoids S and T are called Morita dual monoids of the categories \({}_ S{\mathcal C}\) and \({\mathcal C}_ T\) are dually equivalent. If \({\mathcal C}\) is a left S-act and a right T-act and \(s(ct)=(sc)t\) for all \(s\in S\), \(c\in C\), \(t\in T\), then \({}_ SC_ T\) will be called S-T-biact. The monoids S and T are Morita dual iff S and T contain zero and there exists an S-T- biact \({}_ SC_ T\) which is cyclic injective in S-Act and Act-T and a cogenerator in \({}_ S{\mathcal C}\) and \({\mathcal C}_ T\) and, in addition, \(S\cong End_ T(_ S{\mathcal C}_ T)\) and \(T\cong End_ S(_ S{\mathcal C}_ T)\) as monoids. The monoid S is called reflexive if the categories \({}_ S{\mathcal C}\) and \({\mathcal C}_ T\) are dually equivalent and with \({}_ S{\mathcal C}_ S\cong_ SS_ S\). If a finite monoid S has a Morita dual monoid T then \(T\cong S\), i.c. S is, in particular, a reflexive monoid.
