Let M be a compact, connected, and oriented 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold, and let G be a compact semi-simple Lie group. It is known that the properties of the moduli space of all anti-self dual Yang-Mills connections on a G-principal bundle P over M have significant implications with regard to the theory of complex manifolds. Guided by this circumstance the author investigates certain finite-dimensional vector bundles, the so-called index bundles, over the moduli space in terms of metrics, connections, and curvature. This analysis is motivated by the following conjecture: if the base manifold M is a Kähler surface with an ample line bundle, then the moduli space admits a holomorphic vector bundle of positive first Chern class. The paper presents a series of theorems in this context; however, in a ``note added in proof'' it is stated that the author has established a theorem that is of relevance to his conjecture in the following sense: Let (M,h) be a compact Hodge surface and let P be a principal bundle over M. Then the moduli space of anti-self dual connections on P can be endowed with a holomorphic line bundle of positive first Chern class.
