The paper is related to the concept of the rank of a manifold of nonpositive sectional curvature as developed by \textit{W. Ballmann}, \textit{M. Brin} and \textit{P. Eberlein} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 122, 171-203 (1985; Zbl 0589.53047)]. We construct compact real analytic manifolds M of rank 1 which contain totally geodesic subspaces \(N\subset M\) with rank(N)\(\geq 2\).
