      The nonlinear Schrödinger equation obtained by inclusion of an intensity dependent refractive index in the evolution equation describing pulse envelope propagation in an optical fiber is considered. The split- step spectral method by \textit{T. R. Taha} and \textit{M. J. Ablowitz} [ibid. 55, 203-230 (1984; Zbl 0541.65082)] improved by adding the loss term \(i\gamma (x)u(| u|^ 2-1)\) was used to solve this equation \(iu_ t+(\alpha /2)u_{xx}+| u|^ 2u+i\gamma u(| u|^ 2-1)=0\) numerically. The method is generalized in the present article to include to include also dark pulse (i.e. for group-velocity dispersion \(>0)\). The computed evolution of a symmetric dark pulse \(u(x,0)=(1-\sec h^ 2x)^{1/2}\) with normal dispersion \((\alpha =-1)\), without an absorption is shown in plots.
