A subgroup H of a group G is called almost normal if it has a finite index in its normal closure, while H is said to be virtually normal if it has only finitely many conjugates in G. As generalizations of groups in which normality is a transitive relation (T-groups), the author considered in a previous paper [Rend. Semin. Mat. Univ. Padova 81, 107- 149 (1989; see the preceding review Zbl 0692.20028)] the classes \(T^*\) and V of groups in which every subnormal subgroup is almost normal or virtually subnormal, respectively. Similar definitions were given for \(T_ n\)-groups and \(V_ n\)-groups, when the indices in the normal closures or the numbers of conjugates are bounded by n. The intersection \(U=T^*\cap V\) is clearly the class of groups G such that the index \(| H^ G:H_ G|\) is finite for each subnormal subgroup H, and \(U_ n\) will denote the class of groups for which these indices are bounded by n. It was shown by \textit{H. Heineken} and \textit{J. Lennox} [Boll. Unione Mat. Ital., VI. Ser. B 4, 829-841 (1985; Zbl 0598.20027)] that a subgroup of finite index of a T-group is a \(U_ n\)-group for some n. In the same direction it is proved in this paper that the properties \(T^*\) and U are inherited by subgroups of finite index, and related results are obtained for \(T_ n\)-groups and \(U_ n\)-groups. Moreover, it is shown that a group G belongs to the class \(T^*\) if and only if the almost normality is a transitive relation in G. Also \(T^*\)-groups can be characterized as those in which every subgroup which is subnormal in some subgroup of finite index is almost normal.
