Inverse problems for partial differential equations (Q5892306)

While this third edition still follows the outline of the first and second editions (see the reviews in Zbl 0908.35134 and Zbl 1092.35001), it has been revised and updated in several places in order to reflect the further progress made over the course of the subsequent 10 years after the appearance of the second edition. The added material emphasises new ideas and techniques and includes, among others, topics such as the use of the stationary phase method in the two-dimensional elliptic problems [\textit{A. L. Bukhgeim}, J. Inverse Ill-Posed Probl. 16, No.~1, 19--33 (2008; Zbl 1142.30018)] in Chapter 5, or the use of multiple frequencies data for improving stability (a.o., [\textit{V. Isakov}, Contemp. Math. 640, 59--70 (2015; Zbl 1346.35232)]; [\textit{J. Cheng} et al., J. Differ. Equations 260, No.~5, 4786--4804 (2016; Zbl 1401.35339)]) in Chapter 6. There are numerous other additions as well as corrections and improvements at many places throughout the book. While exercises are given throughout the text, at the end of Chapters 3--9 the reader will also find lists of as yet unsolved open problems. The book in its present third edition thus continues to serve as a valuable introduction and reference work on the contemporary analytical and numerical methods for treating inverse problems for PDE and it will guide its readers straight to forefront of current mathematical research questions in this field.
