The authors prove a Tauberian theorem for Walsh series of two variables, and they use it to obtain several results about uniqueness of Cesàro summable double Walsh series. Namely, they show that up to sets of measure zero, Cesàro summability of double Walsh series is the same as convergence of the square dyadic partial sums, under a suitable growth condition, that uniqueness holds for Cesàro summable double Walsh series. For each double Walsh series \(S = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty}\sum_{l=0}^{\infty}a_{k,l}w_{k,l}\) let \(\sigma_{n,m} := \frac{1}{nm}\sum_{k=1}^{n}\sum_{l=1}^{m}S_{k,l}\) denote the Cesàro means of \(S\). The partial Cesàro means are \(\sigma^1_{n,m} := \frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=1}^{n}S_{k,m}\) and \(\sigma^2_{n,m} := \frac{1}{m}\sum_{l=1}^{m}S_{n,l}\). Among others, the authors prove Theorem 1. Suppose that \(E\) is a measurable subset of \(\mathbf I^2\) and \(S\) is a double Walsh series whose means \(g_n^1= \sigma^1_{2^n,2^n}, \sigma^2_{2^n,2^n}\), and \(\sigma_{2^n,2^n}\) satisfy \(\lim_{n\to\infty}g_n(x)=f(x)\) for \(x\in E\) for some finite valued function \(f\). Then \(\lim_{n\to\infty}S_{2^n,2^n}(x)=f(x)\) for almost every \(x\in E\).
