This book is the reprint of the author's 1996 edition [Fourier integral operators. Basel: Birkhäuser (1996; Zbl 0841.35137)]. As the publishers state in the forword, the aim of the Modern Birkhäuser Classics series is to address the re-release important books of the last years ``to ensure that these treasures reamin accessible to new generations of students, scholars and researchers''. The statement is appropriate for the present book, written by one of the founders of the mathematical theory of the Fourier integral operators, see \textit{J. J. Duistermaat} and \textit{L. Hörmander} [Acta Math. 128, 183--269 (1972; Zbl 0232.47055)]. We recall that, according to the point of view of the author on the subject, the presentation emphasized the links with symplectic differential geometry. Aplications to hyperbolic equations were included, with particular attention to singularities of the global solutions.
