``From curve fitting to machine learning'' is in fact a useful book. It is not for the pure mathematics lover; it contains the basic formulas of curve fitting and related subjects and throws in, what is missing in so many books, the code to reproduce the results. The code is written in CIP (Mathematica's computational intelligence package), an open source package that the readers can easily take advantage of. Before hitting the reader with machine learning, as a warm up exercise curve fitting basics and clustering are covered fairly thoroughly. Then the juicy part, machine learning, is discussed in sufficient detail so that the novice reader gets the idea and will be able to solve some interesting problems such as pattern recognition. The book closes with a short description of the CIP package. All in all this is an interesting and useful book both for novice as well as expert readers. For the novice it is a good introductory book and the expert will appreciate the many examples and working code.
