Let \(S\) be a foundation locally compact topological semigroup with identity, and let \(M(S)\) be the Banach algebra of all bounded regular Borel measures on \(S\) with usual norm and convolution product. Denote by \(M_a(S)\) the space of all measures \(\mu\in M(S)\) satisfying the property that both maps \(x\in S\mapsto \delta_x*| \mu| \in M(S)\) and \(x\in S\mapsto | \mu| *\delta_x\in M(S)\) are weakly continuous, where \(\delta_x\) stands for the point mass at \(x\). The paper treats the character (or \(\chi\)-) amenability of \(S\). More exactly, the semigroup \(S\) is said to be \(\chi\)-amenable if it admits a left \(\chi\)-mean on \(M_a(S)^*\). There are established several necessary and sufficient conditions for \(S\) to be \(\chi\)-amenable, using both cohomology as well as global and pointwise properties.
