The author uses topological degree theory to prove the following local invertibility theorem: Suppose E is a Banach space, U is an open subset of E, and f is Fréchet differentiable from U into E. If f differs from the identity map by a compact map and \(f'(x)\) is invertible for each x in U then f is a local homeomorphism on U.
