The paper consists of two different parts. The first applies a simple criterion for the vanishing of the Iwasawa \(\lambda^-\!_ p\)-invariant of a CM field (\(p\geq 3)\) to prove a positive density statement for the set of primes p for which \(\lambda^-\!_ p(k)=0\). In the second part of the paper, the Brauer-Siegel theorem is applied to give explicit bounds for the \(\mu\)-invariant of a \({\mathbb{Z}}_ p\)-extension. When K/k is a totally ramified \({\mathbb{Z}}_ p\)-extension and \(p\geq 3\), the bound is \[ \mu(K/k)\quad<\quad [k:{\mathbb{Q}}]+\frac{p [k:{\mathbb{Q}}]}{(p-1) \log p}(\log | d_ k|^{1/(2[k:{\mathbb{Q}}])}+ \] \[ +2+\log \log(p | d_ k|^{(1/(2[k:{\mathbb{Q}}])})) \] where \(d_ k\) is the discriminant of k. The bound is slightly more complicated if \(p=2\) or if K/k is not totally ramified. For the cyclotomic \({\mathbb{Z}}_ p\)-extension the bound is \(\mu_ p(k)\leq [k:{\mathbb{Q}}]\) if \(p>>0\). The behavior of the \(\mu\)- invariant in multiple \({\mathbb{Z}}_ p\)-extension (as p varies) in the case of CM fields and in some other special cases is also discussed.
