Let \(G\) be a finite group. Let \(\pi(G)\) denote the set of primes dividing the order of \(G\). \textit{P. Hall} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. 3, 98-105 (1928; JFM 54.0145.01); ibid. 12, 198-200 (1937; Zbl 0016.39204)] proved that a group \(G\) is solvable if and only if for each set of primes \(\pi\subseteq\pi(G)\) with \(|\pi|=|\pi(G)|-1\) there exists a Hall \(\pi\)-group. In this paper the authors using their earlier work [J. Algebra 77, 234-246 (1982; Zbl 0486.20018)] and the classification of finite simple groups prove theorem C: A finite group \(G\) is solvable if and only if either \(|\pi(G)|=2\) or there is an integer \(n\), \(2\leq n\leq|\pi(G)|-1\) so that \(G\) has Hall \(\pi\)-groups for each \(\pi \subseteq \pi(G)\) with \(|\pi|=n\).
