Energy estimates for solutions of the Cauchy problem \[ Pu=D^ m_ 0u+\sum_{| \alpha | +j\leq m,j\leq m-1}a_{\alpha,j}(y) D^{\alpha}u D^ j_ 0u=f \] \(D^ j_ 0u(x_ 0,x)=u_ j(x)\), \(j=0,1,...,m-1\), are derived. P is hyperbolic, but it is not assumed that P is strictly hyperbolic. It is allowed that the polynomial \(\xi_ 0\mapsto P(\xi_ 0,\xi)\) has zeros of multiplicity r, \(1\leq r\leq m\). It is assumed that the coefficients \(a_{\alpha,j}\) are contained in the Gevrey class with respect to the space variables and one or two times continuously differentiable with respect to the time variable. The energy estimates show that certain norms of the solution connected with the Gevrey class are finite if the initial values are in the Gevrey class and if f is in the Gevrey class with respect to the space variable and has sufficient regularity with respect to the time variable. It follows from these energy estimates that the Cauchy problem is well posed for initial values in the Gevrey class. These estimates are related to estimates derived by V. Ya. Ivrij and to estimates derived by M. D. Bronshtejn.
