Let A be a d-dimensional regular local ring with maximal ideal \({\mathfrak m}\), and let \(\lambda\) be an element of \({\mathfrak m}\), \(\lambda\not\in {\mathfrak m}^ 2\). The question addressed in this paper is whether the ring \(A[\lambda^{-1}]\) is super-regular, in the sense that all its maximal ideals can be generated by d-1 elements. The answer is known to be positive for \(d\leq 2\) by unique factorization, and for \(d=3\) by a theorem of \textit{O. Gabber} [in Groupes de Brauer, Sémin., Les Plans-sur-Bex 1980, Lect. Notes Math. 844, 129-209 (1981; Zbl 0472.14013)]. The present paper gives a positive answer when A is a localization of an algebra finitely generated over a field, and A/\({\mathfrak m}\) is infinite.
