Let P be a p-toral group, G a compact Lie group, \(\rho\) : \(P\to G\) a homomorphism and C(\(\rho\)) its centralizer. The homomorphism C(\(\rho\))\(\times P\to G\) induces ad(\(\rho\)): BC(\(\rho\))\(\to Map(BP,BG)_{\rho}\) and, taking disjoint unions over all conjugacy classes of such homomorphisms, a map ad: \(\coprod BC(\rho)\to Map(BP,BG)\). This is shown to be a mod p equivalence, extending earlier work of Dwyer and Zabrodsky. (There is an unfortunate misprint in the statement of the main theorem.) Central to the proof is that the induced homomorphisms [BT,BG]\(\to \hom (K(BG),K(BT))\) and Rep(T,G)\(\to [BT,BG]\) are injective and surjective, respectively, which are established by taking a mod p approximation to a torus. Then the domain of ad is replaced by Bhom(P,G) and the proof is completed by induction on the number of components in P, using results on homotopy fixed-point sets established earlier. Intermediate steps and ideas are of independent interest.
