This is a nicely written and useful book. It is to a large extent self-contained, so that it can be read (at least partially) not only by specialists and by Ph.\,D.\ students specializing in operator theory, but also by university students of higher courses, who are familiar with basic facts on Banach spaces. The book consists of five chapters (Banach Algebras, Operators, Essential Spectrum, Taylor Spectrum, Orbits and Capacity) containing altogether 42 sections, an Appendix of six sections (Banach Spaces, Analytic Vector Valued Functions, \(C^\infty\)-Functions, Some Geometric Properties of Banach Spaces, Basic Properties of \(H^\infty\)). The bibliography counts 369 positions. There is also an Index and Index of Symbols. Since it is the second edition of the book, first published in 2003 and well described in Zbl 1017.47001, I shall shortly describe the differences between both editions. The second edition has five sections, 21 bibliographical positions, and 58 pages more than the first one. A section on semiregularities is added to Chapter III. It deals with the concept introduced by the author of the book and used for defining a closed-range spectrum. Two new sections are added to Chapter IV. They clarify and enlarge the previous exposition of Taylor functional calculus. In Chapter V, one section is split into two, it gives much more information on the invariant subspace problem and on hypercyclic vectors. Section 40 is completely new, giving a comprehensive account on the Scott Brown technique.
