The purpose of the book is a consistent introduction to parametric, non- and semi-parametric regression. It is oriented to applications and it is written for a wide spectrum of potential readers. This brings with itself a moderate formal level. Only knowledge of elementary probability theory and statistics is presupposed. The sections which treat more complex details or contain additional information are specially marked. In two appendices the necessary basics are put together, to matrix algebra, as well as to probability theory and inductive statistics. In the voluminous chapter 3 linear regression models are treated. Generalised linear models form the subject of chapter 4. Binary regression models and models for countable data are dealt with as special cases. Categorial regression models with several categories follow in the next chapter. Mixed models are considered in chapter 6. They also include random effects or coefficients. Chapter 7 is again rather voluminous. It treats nonparametric regression models. It is followed by structured additive regression models in chapter 8. Above all, such methods are treated for which suitable software exists. The homepage to the book contains tips to suitable statistical software as well as most of the data sets used in the book.
