Let F: \({\mathbb{C}}^ 2\to {\mathbb{C}}^ 2\) be a map defined by the polynomials \(F_ 1,F_ 2\in {\mathbb{C}}[X_ 1,X_ 2]\), \({\mathbb{C}}\) the complex numbers. The two-dimensional Jacobian conjecture states that F is invertible (and the inverse is a polynomial map) if and only if \(\det (\partial F_ i/\partial X_ j)\in {\mathbb{C}}^*\). In the paper under review, there are given conditions and restrictions for the existence of a counterexample. For instance it is necessary to have \(\gcd (\deg (F_ 1),\deg (F_ 2))\geq 16\). There is an equivalent condition to the Jacobian Umkehrproblem: Let C be the generic curve defined by \(F_ 1\). Then the differential \((dX_ 1)/(\partial F_ 1/\partial X_ 2)\) on C can only be exact if the genus of C is zero.
