The level s(D) of a ring D is the least integer n such that \(- 1=\sum^{n}_{i=1}x^ 2_ i\) with each \(x_ i\in D\). If no such n exists, we define \(s(D)=\infty\). The author proves that any number \(2^ k\) or \(2^{k+1}\), where \(k=0,1,...\), may occur as a level of a quaternion division algebra. In fact, the author states that \((\frac{a,t}{K})\), where \(K={\mathbb{R}}(x_ 1,...,x_ n)((t))\), \(a=\sum^{n}_{i=1}x^ 2_ 1\) and \(n\geq 2\) is a quaternion division algebra and its level is n provided \(n=2^ k\) or \(2^{k+1}\). The question if other integers can occur as the level of a quaternion division algebra remains open.
