The differential equation \[ u_ t=u_{xx}+f(u),\quad 0\leq x\leq 1,\quad t\geq 0, \] with Dirichlet boundary conditions is studied. It is proved that under certain dissipativity growth conditions on f, generically the attractor of this equation is a graph of a \(C^ 1\) function defined on a closed subset of non-empty interior of a finite dimensional subspace of \(L_ 2(0,1)\). The dimension of this subspace is equal to the largest instability index of the equilibria of the equation.
