This is one of the first well-documented publications in a language other than Polish on the famous school of mathematicians developing in Lvov (once Austrian Lemberg, today Ukrainian Lviv) between the two World Wars. Until now there have only existed some publications in English, in particular by J. Wolenski (1985/88), on the logicians and philosophers connected to Warsaw and Lvov. Duda discusses in detail the work of the functional analysts (Steinhaus, Banach, Schauder and others) and not least the terrible losses due to deportations by the Russians (after 1939) and above all the German occupation after 1941. The latter entailed a ruthless policy of extermination of many Polish intellectuals, and not just the Jewish ones among them. The article, which was translated into German by A. Müssiggang from Cottbus, is concluded by a list of short biographies of leading mathematicians from Lvov which comprises as many as 26 persons.
