This second edition is about twice the length of the first one [1997; Zbl 0935.35002]. The use of Sobolev gradients to find critical points of the Ginzburg-Landau functional has greatly expanded. A version of the Nash-Moser inverse function theorem has been included, which avoids the problem of loss of derivatives. The Tricomi equation and the hyperbolic Monge-Ampère equation have been treated. New convergence results for continuous steepest decent are included. Moreover, several authors (I. Knowles, R. Wallace, J. Karatson, R. Renka, J. M. Neuberger, S. Sial) have contributed new sections on their own work.
