This paper is concerned with certain radical Banach algebras of power series. Let \(\omega\) be a function from the non-negative integers, \({\mathbb{Z}}^+\), to the positive reals. If \(\omega (m+n)\leq \omega (m)\omega (n)\) for all m, n in \({\mathbb{Z}}^+\) and \(\lim_{n\to \infty}\omega (n)^{1/n}=0\) then we say that \(\omega\) is a radical algebra weight. In this case the algebra of formal power series, \(\ell^ 1(\omega)=\{\sum f(n)X^ n:\quad \sum | f(n)| \omega (n)<\infty \},\) is a commutative radical Banach algebra with identity adjoined. There are obvious closed ideals in \(\ell^ 1(\omega)\) which are denoted standard ideals. It was previously unknown whether or not other closed ideals, so called nonstandard ideals, could be present if \(\omega\) did not fall in the category of 'nice' radical algebra weights where all closed ideals are known to be standard. In this paper we construct a class of radical algebra weights \(\omega\) such that \(\ell^ 1(\omega)\) contains nonstandard ideals; these ideals are generated by 'lacunary' elements which are supported at points where there are large 'drops' in the weight \(\omega\).
