Proofs are offered of the following two theorems: Theorem 1. If G is a finitely generated Fuchsian group then there exists \(n=n(G)\) so that G has a faithful representation as a subgroup of Gl(n,\({\mathbb{Z}})\). Theorem 2: For G as above, let \(S=\{\alpha_ 1,...,\alpha_ k\}\subset G\) and \(\gamma\in G\) satisfy \(\alpha_ i\gamma \neq \gamma \alpha_ i\) for \(i\leq k\). Then G contains a subgroup H of finite index so that \(\gamma\in H\) but \(\alpha_ i\not\in H\) for \(i\neq k.\) Theorem 2 follows from Theorem 1 (note that the author does not assume that G is finitely generated but uses that assumption in the proof) and the latter is derived from standard arguments and the Frobenius theorem on induced representations. Theorem 2 is an extension of a result of \textit{P. Scott} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 17, 555-565 (1978; Zbl 0412.57006)].
