    The functional equation \((*)\quad f(x+y)=\sum^{n}_{i=1}g_ i(x)h_ i(y)\) has been investigated by many authors, among others by Aczél and Chung, Jarai, McKiernan, Szekelyhidi, Vincze, including \textit{J. K. Chung}, the reviewer and \textit{C. T. Ng} [Linear Algebra Appl. 66, 259-277 (1985; Zbl 0564.39002)]. The author proves the following extension theorem. Let \(f,g_ i,h_ i: [0,\infty [\to K\) (either \({\mathbb{R}}\) or \({\mathbb{C}})\) \((i=1,2,...,n)\) satisfy (*) for all x,y\(\geq 0\) and suppose that \(g_ i's\) and \(h_ i's\) are linearly independent on ]0,\(\infty [\) and [0,\(\infty [\) respectively. Then there exist unique extensions \(f^*,g^*_ i,h^*_ i\) of \(f,g_ i,h_ i\) from \({\mathbb{R}}\to K\) satisfying (*) for all real x,y. The measurability (continuity) of \(f,g_ i,h_ i\) on [0,\(\infty [\) implies that of \(f^*,g^*_ i,h^*_ i\) on \({\mathbb{R}}\).
