A subset Z of \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\) is called a generalized cylinder of direction u (for a unit vector u) if Steiner symmetrization of Z at a hyperplane orthogonal to u yields a compact convex cylinder with generators parallel to u. It is proved that each convex body K in \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\) contains a generalized cylinder Z of given direction u with \(V(K)\leq (1+1/(d- 1))^{d-1}V(Z),\) where V denotes the volume. The inequality is sharp. The proof uses Steiner and Schwarz symmetrization. (If Z is required to be convex, the inequality is true with an additional factor d on the right-hand side, by a result of \textit{A. M. Macbeath} [Can. J. Math. 3, 54-61 (1951; Zbl 0042.164)]). As an application, the author obtains an estimate for the density of certain finite coverings.
