Generalizing results of \textit{P. D. T. A. Elliott} [Can. J. Math. 32, 893- 907 (1980; Zbl 0444.10051)], \textit{A. Hildebrand} and \textit{J. Spilker} [Manuscr. Math. 32, 213-230 (1980; Zbl 0446.10041)] and the first author [Analysis 6, 1-24 (1986; Zbl 0577.10038)], the authors characterize additive functions f: \({\mathbb{N}}\to {\mathbb{C}}\), satisfying \[ (*)\quad \sup_{x\geq 1}(1/x)\cdot \sum_{n\leq x}\Phi (| f(n)|)\quad <\quad \infty, \] where \(\Phi\) : [0,\(\infty [\to [0,\infty [\) is a non- decreasing function with the property \(\lim_{x\to \infty}\Phi (x)=\infty\). Then the authors prove: If f satisfies (*), and if \(\Phi (x- 1)\geq c\cdot \Phi (x)\) for \(x\geq 2\), then the series \[ (**)\quad \sum_{p;| f(p)| >1}p^{-1},\quad \sum_{p;| f(p)| \leq 1}p^{-1}\cdot | f(p)|^ 2,\quad \sum_{p;| f(p^ m)| >1}\sum_{m\geq 1}p^{-m}\cdot \Phi (| f(p^ m)|) \] converge, and (***) \(\sum_{p\leq x;| f(p)| \leq 1}p^{-1}\cdot f(p)=O(1)\). On the other hand, assume \(\Phi (x+y)\leq c_ 2\cdot \Phi (x)\cdot \Phi (y);\) then the convergence of the series (**) and inequality (***) imply (*). The last-mentioned result is not true, if \(\sup_{x,y}\Phi (x+y)/\Phi (x)\cdot \Phi (y)=\infty.\)
