This volume is a handbook of sampling and provides an unusual and useful collection of articles covering the theory and practice of sampling surveys; all articles are written either by experts or actual practitioners. \textit{D. R. Bellhouse} gives a brief historical account from A. N. Kiaer, he challenged the position of complete enumeration in social surveys, to M. Hansen and W. Hurwitz who joined the U.S. Bureau of Census to develop sampling methods for use by the Bureau, and on some recent developments of sampling surveys. \textit{T. Dalenius} outlines the contents of a course on sampling survey. \textit{A. Chaudhuri} discusses in detail various sampling strategies and the optimality problems associated with them. \textit{P. K. Pathak} shows that for estimating the population mean under three commonly used forms, SRSWOR, SRSWR, SRSFC, etc., the sample mean estimator based on the distinct units is admissible, unbiased and asymptotically normally distributed iff the Erdős-Rényi-Hájek condition is satisfied; and that the three commonly used forms of simple random sampling are all asymptotically cost-efficient. \textit{V. P. Godambe} and \textit{M. E. Thompson} discuss the role of randomization in inference with special reference to single stage unequal probability sampling. \textit{D. R. Bellhouse} provides a detailed discussion about systematic sampling. \textit{D. A. Binder} and \textit{M. A. Hidiroglou} discuss sampling in time by two main approaches, the classical approach and the time series approach. \textit{W. A. Ericson} reviews some of the results obtained by the Bayesian approach to problems of inference and sampling designs for finite populations. \textit{G. Nathan} discusses inference based on data from complex sampling designs. \textit{J. Sedransk} and \textit{P. J. Smith} provide inference for finite population quantiles. \textit{P. K. Sen} shows asymptotics in finite population sampling, \textit{J. C. Koop} describes the concept of interpenetrating or replicated samples introduced by P. C. Mahalanobis. \textit{I. Thomsen} and \textit{D. Tesfu} deal with superpopulation models and their applications in sampling from finite populations. \textit{R. M. Royall} also discusses the so-called superpopulation models and provides a prediction approach to sampling theory. \textit{D. H. Freeman} discusses the analysis of contingency tables compiled from survey data. \textit{J. N. K. Rao} reviews the various methods of variance estimation in sample surveys and \textit{P. S. R. S. Rao} the methodology of ratio and regression estimation. Finally, some others review special survey techniques, like capture- recapture in ecological studies, data-based sampling for environmental resources, transect sampling to assess wildlife populations and marine resources, and, \textit{R. Velu} and \textit{G. M. Naidu} review current sampling methods in marketing research. \textit{P. V. Sukhatme} discusses methods for controlling and estimating observational errors in sampling surveys. \textit{A. S. Hedayat}, \textit{C. R. Rao} and \textit{J. Stufken} present some new problems in the design of sampling surveys and provide sampling designs to avoid contiguous units occurring in samples in order to increase the efficiency of estimates.
