Notes on infinite permutation groups (Q5906269)

This book is based on lectures delivered by the authors at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, in 1996. It comprises an introduction to the general theory of infinite permutation groups and subsequently focuses on Jordan groups, leading to the classification of infinite Jordan groups due to Adeleke, Cameron, Macpherson and Neumann. In addition, connections with model theory are treated, centering on Fraïsse's theorem on homogeneous \(\mathcal L\)-structures and the Hrushovski construction. The book gives an excellent introduction into the subject and a lucid exposition of some recent research results. Moreover, in the concluding section applications and open questions are discussed.
