A presentation and a representation of the Held group (Q5906293)

The main result of this paper is a new presentation for the sporadic simple group of Held. This presentation is obtained from the 2-local structure elucidated already in Held's original paper, and verified by Todd-Coxeter coset enumeration. As a corollary the author obtains a new existence and uniqueness proof of Held's group, similar to that obtained earlier by \textit{L. H. Soicher} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 23, No. 3, 235-238 (1991; Zbl 0754.20002)], as well as an easy proof of the existence of a subgroup \(S_4(4):2\). A recipe is also given for obtaining the given generators as \(51\times 51\) matrices over \(\text{GF}(2)\). No details of the derivation or proof of the results are given.
