The functional equation is \(f_ j(x)=\sum^ n_{k=1} a_{jk} f_ j(c_{jk} x)+h_ j(x)\), \(j=1,\dots,n\), \(x \in ]0,b]\). The \(c_{jk} \in ]0,1[\) are constant and so are the \(a_{jk}\) \((j,k=1, \dots,n)\); \(b=\infty\) is permitted. In fact, what distinguishes the two cases discussed in this paper is whether \(b\) is finite or infinite. The known functions \(h_ j\) and the unknown ones \(f_ j\) \((j=1,\dots,n)\) are in a Sobolev space over the reals in the first case and in \(L^ 2 (0,b)\) in the second. In both cases necessary and sufficient conditions are offered for the existence and uniqueness of solutions. \{Much research has been done on the above equation before the one reference in this paper [\textit{P. Le Floch} and \textit{L. T. Tsien}, Asymptotic Anal. 3, No. 4, 321-340 (1990; Zbl 0731.35006)] see e.g. \textit{M. Kuczma}, \textit{B. Choczewski} and \textit{R. Ger} [Iterative functional equations (1990; Zbl 0703.39005)]\}.
