    Let \(L: W\to Z\) and \(I: W\to Y\) be two mappings, where \(W\) is a nonempty subset of a linear space, and \(Z\) and \(Y\) are normed linear spaces. Define the number \(E(\delta)\) by \(\inf \{E( \delta, S)\mid S: Y\to Z\}\), where \(E(\delta, S)= \sup\{ \| Lx- Sy\|\): \(x\in W\), \(y\in Y\), \(\| Ix- y\|\leq \delta\}\). A mapping \(S_ 0: Y\to Z\) satisfying \(E(\delta, S_ 0)= E(\delta)\) is said to be an optimal method for recovering \(L\) by means of \(I\). If \(S_ 0\) is such a method, then any \(x_ 0\in W\) satisfying \[ \sup\{ \| Lx_ 0- S_ 0 y\|:\;y\in Y, \| Ix_ 0- y\|\leq \delta\}= E(\delta) \] is said to be an optimal element for recovering \(L\) by means of \(I\). At the beginning of the paper the authors point out some sufficient conditions for optimal recovery methods and optimal revovery elements. After that they apply these general results in the case when \(W\) is the closed unit ball of diverse spaces (\(H_ p\), \(A_ p\), \(h_ p\) and \(a_ p\)) of analytic or harmonic functions and find optimal methods as well as optimal elements for recovering the mappings \(Lf= f(\xi)\) and \(Lf= f'(0)\) by means of \(If= f(z_ 1)\) and\(If= (f (-h), f(h))\), respectively.
