This is an elegant well-written paper which examines in some detail the structure of various modules for \(\text{Sym}(\Omega)\) where \(\Omega\) is a countable set. Section 2 considers results about the modules which arise from partitions where just one element of the partition is infinite. In this case many of the results of \textit{G. D. James} [The representation theory of the symmetric groups, Lect. Notes Math. 682 (1978; Zbl 0393.20009)] are shown to hold. In particular the Specht modules can be constructed. In Section 3 the author looks in more detail at the situation where the partition is into just two parts, one of which has finite size \(k\). In this situation one can examine the structure of \(\text{Sym}(\Omega)\) on the subsets of size \(k\), denoted by \([\Omega]^k\). It is worth mentioning two results from this section. Theorem 3.2: Any non-zero module of \(F[\Omega]^k\) contains the Specht module, \(S^k\), for any field \(F\). This has the immediate corollary that the Specht module is irreducible. The next theorem the reviewer would like to point out is Theorem 3.15: \(F[\Omega]^k\) has a composition series in which the composition factors are isomorphic to \(S^l\), where \(l=0,1,\dots,k\), and each \(S^l\) occurs exactly once. There are a number of other good things in this paper which make it very interesting.
