This note deals with the foreword to the special issue consisting of a selected number of papers that were presented at the conference ``Complex economic phenomena in time and space'' held at Odense, Denmark in August 2002. This conference was held to honor and pay tribute to an outstanding scientist and one of the most inspiring economists of his generation namely, Tönn Puu.
