Let \((X,\tau)\) be a topological space. A subset \(A\) of \(X\) is said to be \(\alpha\)-open (resp. semi-preopen or \(\beta\)-open) if \(A\subset \text{Int(Cl(Int}(A)))\) (resp. if \(A\subset \text{Cl(Int(Cl}(A))))\). The complement of a semi-preopen set is said to be semiclosed. A subset \(S\) of \((X,\tau)\) is said to be semi-preregular if it is both semi-preopen and semi-preclosed. A subset \(S\) is called a weak \(AB\)-set if \(S=U\cap V\), where \(U\) is an open set and \(V\) is semi-preregular. The authors prove that \(S\) is open iff \(S\) is a weak \(AB\)-set and an \(\alpha\)-open set. A function \(f:(X,\tau)\to(Y,\sigma)\) is said to be weak \(AB\)-continuous (resp. \(\alpha\)-continuous) if for each open set \(V\) of \(Y\), \(f^{-1}(V)\) is a weak \(AB\) (resp. \(\alpha\)-open)-set in \(X\). The authors obtain the following decomposition of continuity: \(f\) is continuous iff it is weak \(AB\)-continuous and \(\alpha\)-continuous. This result improves the result from \textit{E. Hatir, T. Noiri} and \textit{S. Yüksei} [Acta Math. Hung. 70, No.~1-2, 145-150 (1996; Zbl 0842.54025)]. A function \(f:(X,\tau)\to(Y,\sigma)\) is said to be completely continuous (\textit{S. P. Arya} and \textit{R. Gupta} [Kyungpook Math. J. 14, 131-143 (1974; Zbl 0328.54006)]) if for each open set \(V\) of \(Y\), \(f^{-1}(V)\) is regular open in \(X\). In the last part of the paper the authors obtain new decompositions of completely continuous functions which generalize some results from \textit{J. Dontchev} and \textit{M. Przemski} [Acta Math. Hung. 71, No.~1-2, 109-120 (1996; Zbl 0852.54012)].
