For given \(r \in \mathbb{N}\) and given monotone function \(f \in C^{r}[-1,1]\) is proved the existence of a number \(N=N(f,r)\) such that for \(n \geq N\) there are monotone continuous piecewise polynomials which approximate \(f,\) and the pointwise estimates are given with the aid of the second order modulus of smoothness of \(f^{(r)}.\) It is also proved that such estimates are in general invalid with \(N\) independent of \(f\).
