[This is the second edition of the first two authors' book which appeared originally as Vol. 146 of the series ``Mathematics in Science and Engineering'' at Academic Press (1980; Zbl 0426.46009).] The present second edition of this text, addressed to an audience of graduate and post-graduate students as well as practitioners in fields of engineering and other applied sciences who need the basic concepts of functional analysis and operator theory, remains basically unchanged compared to the first edition (see the review in Zbl 0426.46009), save for a slightly updated list of references which includes mostly books recommended for further study, as well as some extra examples. The book, in any case, retains its value as an immensely readable textbook for advanced students in applied mathematics. The authors gave much care to properly introducing, explaining and motivating the subjects and notions covered in the text; the book is outstanding in this respect. Since the text is essentially self-contained and each chapter is accompanied by a problem section with (mostly easy) exercises, it is also suitable for self-study.
