The author presents the notion of the boundary value space in a way that enables the extension to the case of Hermitian operators with arbitrary defect numbers. The notions of admissible operators and dissipative operators are introduced and several characterizations of dissipative extensions of closed Hermitians operators are then given. For instance, if \(B\) is a regular extension of a closed Hermitian operator \(A\) in a Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\) with \(\sigma_ p(B)\) not covering the lower halfplane, then there exists a boundary value space \(({\mathcal H}_ +,{\mathcal H}_ -,X_ +,X_ -)\) of \(A\) such that \[ {\mathcal D}_ B={\mathcal D}_ A+\{f\in{\mathcal L}_ \lambda: KX_ +f=X_ -f\} \] where \(K\) is an admissible operator from \({\mathcal H}_ +\) into \({\mathcal H}_ -\) and \({\mathcal L}_ \lambda={\mathcal N}_ \lambda\dotplus{\mathcal N}_{\overline\lambda}\) where \({\mathcal N}_ \lambda\) and \({\mathcal N}_{\overline\lambda}\) are defect subspaces of \(A\), \(\hbox {Im}\neq 0\). In this case, \(B\) is closed iff \(K\) is closed. Some applications are then indicated.
