The first edition of K. Jänich's very popular, entertaining, inspiring leisurely and comprehensible introduction to the fundamental concepts, methods and results of basic general topology appeared in 1980 (Zbl 0448.54002), and its translation into English became available in 1984 (Zbl 0567.54001). The lively and often colloquial style of the presentation, which is perfectly suited for providing the beginner with the minimal background knowledge in general topology in a down-to-earth language, has made this textbook to a classical primer. Five consecutive editions of this particularly user-friendly first course in topology, in which the well-proved text has always been left (basically) intact, testify its outstanding popularity among generations of students. Now, in the present fifth edition, all minor inaccuracies and misprints seem to be eliminated, and the type-setting in \TeX{} certainly completes the overall aesthetic character of this highly individual textbook. Now as before, K. Jänich's vivid and lovely introduction to general topology is among the greatest standard primers in the field.
