This textbook treats the fundamental statements of theromostatics (equilibrium thermodynamics) in a thorough and clear manner. It is arranged by three chapters. The first one presents mathematical tools and the modern notations used here. In the second one the thermodynamical laws are introduced and evaluated. The second law is analyzed both by way of discussing cyclic processes and by the study of differential forms. The concavity or convexity, resp., of thermodynamic potentials is discussed comprehensively. The third chapter contains general applications; relations between characteristic material coefficients, the Joule-Thomson effect, first order phase transitions, generalizations for multicomponent systems, ideal mixtures, chemical reactions, electrically and magnetically polarized media. Typical engineering problems are not treated. The solid and tidy presentation recommends the book to everyone who wants to get to know thermostatics.
