The author is looking for a theoretical basis for some dynamical effects discovered experimentally in rigid body dynamics on a plane, namely, in the motion of the `celtic stone'. Emphasis is on oscillations of the ribid body close to the equilibrium position or steady rotation. The motion is assumed to occur without friction, and the supporting plane is fixed. An approximate system of equations is obtained which describes nonlinear oscillations of the body in a vicinity of its equilibrium position on a plane, and a complete analysis of that system is given. This is an English translation the paper [Prikl. Mat. Mekh. 47, No. 4, 575--582 (1983; Zbl 0585.73095)] published in Russian.
