[For a review of the first edition, see Zbl 0495.53036.] Now in its second edition, this textbook continuous to offer the probably best introduction to the topics in Riemannian geometry which are centred around the theory of geodesics. From the onset, Riemannian geometry is described in the infinite-dimensional setting. The main new addition to the second edition concerns the proof of the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics for every Riemannian metric on the sphere [\textit{V. Bangert}, Int. J. Math. 4, 1-10 (1993; Zbl 0791.53048); \textit{J. Franks}, Invent. Math. 108, 403-418 (1992; Zbl 0766.53037)]. Contents: Chapter 1: Foundations -- Review of differential calculus and topology -- Differentiable manifolds -- Tensor bundles -- Immersions and submersions -- Vector fields and tensor fields -- Covariant derivation -- The exponential mapping -- Lie groups -- Riemannian manifolds -- Geodesics and convex neighborhoods -- Isometric immersions -- Riemannian curvature -- Jacobi fields. Chapter 2: Curvature and Topology -- Completeness and cut locus -- Appendix-Orientation -- Symmetric spaces -- The Hilbert manifolds of \(H^1\)-curves -- The loop space and the space of closed curves -- The second order neighborhood of a critical point -- Appendix -- The \(S\)- and the \(\mathbb{Z}_2\)-action on \(\Lambda M\) -- Index and curvature -- Appendix -- The injectivity radius for \({1\over 4}\)-pinched manifolds of positive curvature. Chapter 3: Structure of the geodesic flow -- Hamiltonian systems -- Properties of the geodesic flow -- Stable and unstable motions -- Geodesics on surfaces - Geodesics on the ellipsoid -- Closed geodesics on spheres -- The theorem of the three closed geodesics -- Manifolds of non-positive curvature -- The geodesic flow on manifolds of negative curvature -- The main theorem for surfaces of genus 0. References -- Index.
