The main theme of this book is the interplay between matrix theory and matroid theory. It offers a matroid-theoretic approach to linear algebra and a linear-algebraic approach to matroid theory, with a comprehensive presentation of mixed matrices and mixed polynomial matrices. The book is intended to be read by graduate students in engineering, mathematics, and computer science, as well as mathematics oriented engineers and application oriented mathematicians. The material is organized in seven chapters: (1) Introduction to structural approach. (2) Matrix, graph and matroid. (3) Physical observations for mixed matrix formulation. (4) Theory and application of mixed matrices. (5) Polynomial matrix and valuated matroid. (6) Theory and application of mixed polynomial matrices. (7) Further topics (combinatorial relaxation algorithm, combinatorial system theory, and mixed skew-symmetric matrices). The bibliography contains 353 titles.
