Let G be a finite group, p a prime and k a field of characteristic p. The Auslander-Reiten quiver of the group ring kG, denoted A(kG), is the directed graph whose vertices are the isomorphism classes of indecomposable kG-modules, and if M and N are indecomposable kG-modules, then there is an edge \(M\to N\) if and only if there is an irreducible map from M to N. Furthermore the edge \(M\to N\) is labelled with a pair of numbers \((a_{mn},a'_{mn})\) where \(a_{mn}\) is the number of times M occurs in the middle term of an Auslander-Reiten sequence ending at N, and \(a'_{mn}\) is the number of times N occurs in the middle term of an Auslander-Reiten sequence starting at M. Write \(\Delta\) for the connected component of A(kG) containing the trivial kG-module k, and \(\Delta_ s\) for the stable subquiver obtained from \(\Delta\) by leaving out the projective modules and all the edges joined to them. In a remarkable paper [Math. Z. 179, 97-121 (1982; Zbl 0479.20008)] \textit{P. Webb} went a considerable way to determining the structure of \(\Delta_ s\). Using his techniques, the following theorem is proved, which is the main result of the paper. Theorem. If the Sylow p-subgroups of G are neither cyclic, nor dihedral 2-groups, nor generalized quaternion 2-groups, then \(\Delta_ s\cong {\mathbb{Z}}A_{\infty}\).
