For the review of the first (1997) and second (2002) edition, see [Zbl 0910.73001; Zbl 1011.74001]. The book is an introduction to the dynamics of active structures and to the feedback control of lightly damped flexible structures with an emphasis on basic issues and simple working control strategies. This third edition consists of prefaces to all editions, 17 chapters, references, and an index. It includes three completely new chapters when comparing it with the second edition: Chapters 3, 5, and 16. Chapter 1 introduces several elementary notions used in structures and control. Chapter 2 presents briefly some concepts of structural dynamics. Chapter 3 deals with electromagnetic and piezoelectric transducers while Chapter 4 describes piezoelectric beams, plates, and truss. Chapter 5 is devoted to passive damping with piezoelectric transducers. Chapters 6 and 7 consider collocated and non-collocated control systems and their usage in active damping. Chapter 8 covers vibration isolation. Chapters 9--13 present applied concepts from system theory, such as state-space modelling, frequency domain, optimal control, controllability, observability, and stability. In Chapter 14, various structural control applications are included, covering the active damping, position control of flexible structures and vibroacoustics. Chapter 15 is devoted to cable structures. Chapter 16 covers the wavefront control of large optical telescopes. Chapter 17 considers semi-active control. Each chapter is supplied with numerous examples and supplemented with a set of problems. A solution manual is available through the publisher to teachers using this book as a textbook. Particularly, Chapters 1--9 together with some parts of Chapters 10 and 14 can be recommended as an excellent text for a one-semester graduate course in structural control. The third edition of the textbook should serve as an outstanding updated reference book for structural engineers, automation professionals, students, and also for general readers interested in this emerging subject.
