This is the second, revised and updated edition of the book with the same title published in 1997 by the same author (for the review see Zbl 0909.76002). The book is devoted to modern nonlinear dynamics. This is a vast domain, but the author is able to describe in a kind style the basic concepts, language and results in the area. He also adopts an informal style in order to avoid heavy formalisms, and includes many physical aspects just to maintain the interdisciplinary character. The author also presents the basic concepts of ordinary differential equations and Hamiltonian dynamics. The main part of the book is devoted to traditional topics in nonlinear dynamics: integrable systems, chaos, Poincaré maps, logistic maps, the Lorenz system, solitons and the Korteweg-de-Vries equation, the Painlevé property and the test of integrability. The final part of the book discusses in detail the application of fractals and multi-fractals to turbulence. The final chapter includes some exercises that range from direct applications to extensions of the theory developed in the previous chapters. The book is accessible to first-year graduate students in applied mathematics, physics, and engineering. Indeed, it is based on the author's own lecture notes for an interdisciplinary graduate level course on nonlinear dynamics during several years. After a brief introduction to chaotic behavior in nonlinear dynamics, the book is composed by nine chapters: 1. Nonlinear ordinary differential equations; 2. Bifurcation theory; 3. Hamiltonian dynamics: 4. Integrable systems; 5. Chaos in conservative systems; 6. Chaos in dissipative systems; 7. Solitons; 8. Singularity analysis and the Painlevé property of dynamical systems; and 9. Fractals and multi-fractals in turbulence. The list of references is exhaustive.
