This is a slight expansion of the first edition [2009; Zbl 1180.31001], which in turn was partially based on the author's much earlier book [Introduction to potential theory. New York etc.: Wiley-Interscience a Division of John Wiley \& Sons. (1969; Zbl 0188.17203)]. The new edition includes exercises on some of the more basic material to help student readers. Also, separate reference lists are now provided at the end of each chapter. Finally, there is an additional chapter entitled ``Application to Diffusion Processes''. In it the author begins by describing the ``method of images'' for constructing transition functions for Brownian motion. Then, to quote from the introduction to the chapter: ``Existence theorems for parabolic equations of the form \(u_{t}=Lu\), where \(L\) is an elliptic operator, and subject to a mixture of Dirichlet boundary conditions and oblique derivative boundary conditions of the form \(Mu=0\) are addressed via the Hille-Yosida Theorem and the results of the preceding chapter. The Daniell-Stone Theorem concerning measures on lattices is then used to represent the semigroups resulting from the Hille-Yosida Theorem as integrals with respect to transition functions.''
