[For reviews of the previous editions see Zbl 0627.76001, Zbl 0748.76004, Zbl 0876.76002.] The book consists of thirteen chapters. In Chapter 1, the author presents the definitions of turbulence and coherent vortices. In Chapter 2, equations of fluid dynamics for flows of arbitrary density are developed, including Boussinesq equations. Chapter 3 studies linear instability of parallel shear flows in two and three dimensions, as well as thermal convection. Chapter 4 is devoted to free and wall-bounded turbulent shear flows. Mathematical details on Fourier analysis of turbulence are given in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 contains the studies of three-dimensional isotropic turbulence, looked at phenomenologically and from a coherent-vortex point of view, as well as the passive-scalar diffusion. The two-point closure approaches to three-dimensional isotropic turbulence, with applications to passive scalars, are presented in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 is devoted to strictly two-dimensional turbulence from a phenomenological, closure and numerical viewpoints. Chapter 9 deals with quasi-two-dimensional turbulence from an external-geophysical point of view. In Chapter 10, the author presents the statistical thermodynamics of truncated Euler equations. Chapter 11 is devoted to statistical unpredictability in two and three dimensions. Chapter 12 is a review of large eddy simulation techniques, and, finally, in Chapter 13 the effects of stratification, rotation, separation and compressibility are considered.
