Gyroscopic stabilization in the presence of nonconservative forces (Q5920468)

This article is devoted to an investigation of the stability of a linear autonomous nonconservative system with an even number of degrees of freedom in the presence of potential gyroscopic, dissipative and nonconservative position forces. The author finds an explicit approximation of the asymptotic stability domain boundary near the Whitney umbrella singularity and analytic estimates of the critical value of the gyroscopic parameter are presented. As an example the Hauger pendulum stability under momentum action is analyzed.
